What exactly is a Tactical Flashlight?

Your normal, everyday use flashlight is a lot different to a tactical flashlight. Why? Because tactical flashlights are designed with a different purpose in mind.

Tactical flashlights are usually made from durable, aluminium that can take a hit and still live to tell the tale. Designed to be mounted on a weapon and used in a range of different weather conditions, a tactical torch is created to withstand a lot.

If you have been searching for a flashlight that is easy to carry, bright and can also double as a self-defence weapon, then a tactical torch is what you’re looking for.

But, why exactly should you use a tactical flashlight? There are many reasons; here are a few of the most important ones...

Self-Defence

A tactical torch can really help when you are in a dangerous situation. If someone threatens your safety, a bright light with high lumens shining in their eyes can temporarily blind and disorientate someone enough to allow you to escape. Many tactical torches also have bezel edges which are supposed to help if you ever have to break through a window, however it can also be great to use it if you have to defend yourself. Take a look at the Klarus XT12 GT – it is small enough to carry around and it offers a high lumen output.

Identifying Threats

A tactical torch is after all, a torch! So if you are ever walking in a dark place a trusty flashlight is perfect. A torch is there to light up the dark, whether it is at home, in your car or in a dark alley. Tactical flashlights these days are extremely bright, so they can shine at a great distance. Emergency Situations

When the power goes out, the worst thing is to not have a trusty flashlight on hand. Having a tactical torch will mean that you instantly have light, bright light!

What makes a tactical flashlight… tactical?

If you have spent any time at all researching high-quality flashlights, you’ve seen the term “tactical flashlight” more often than you can count. In fact, this formerly descriptive and specific term has become so overused; it has almost lost all meaning.

So, if everyone is using “tactical” to describe any flashlight with a black finish, what is a true tactical flashlight? What characteristics must a flashlight possess to earn that title? What makes a tactical flashlight…tactical?

There are a few features that every tactical flashlight will possess, in one form or another.

High quality – You won’t find a tactical flashlight in the clearance bin, it is a quality investment that will last you for years to come.

Variable modes – A tactical torch must have the ability to cycle between different brightness levels and modes of operation.

Easy to use user interface – This flashlight is designed for dark, dangerous and intense situations, so it makes sense for it to have an easy to use interface. Most tactical flashlights have a tail cap switch, but side switches are also common.

Interruption modes – The ability to quickly access either a high intensity beam or a strobe light is what is known as an interruption mode. This will allow you to disorientate or blind an attacker.

High max lumen output level – Not all situations call for a 300 lumen beam, but if a flashlight doesn’t offer a max lumens output that is in the hundreds, then it’s probably not a tactical flashlight.

Tough and durable construction – You’re probably going to use your tactical flashlight in less than ideal conditions so you need it to work even at the worst of times. Quality tactical torches use aero-grade or anodized aluminium.

Carrying options – Easy access to your flashlight is a tactical requirement. Many proper tactical flashlights will come with a high-quality holster, or an integrated clip that makes it easier to deploy and harder to lose.

Weapon mount compatibility – Tactical flashlights are designed to be used with a firearm. If you have to use duct tape to mount your torch on your weapon then it’s definitely not a tactical flashlight. Always make sure your tactical flashlight is compatible with your preferred mounting method.

What is a Tactical Flashlight?

A tactical flashlight has a different purpose of use than your normal kitchen cabinet model. Tactical flashlights are designed with different materials, usually aerospace grade aluminium. They are designed for high impact stress because they are usually mounted to a weapon like a shotgun or M4/AR15 platform and most are waterproof to varying degrees. Tactical flashlights have textured grips and anti-roll profiles and are usually small enough to easily fit in a pocket. If you are looking for a light for your home defense weapon of choice you will most likely be using a tactical light.

Why should you carry a tactical flashlight?

Self Defense – Flashlights can easily assist you in a self-defense situation. For starters, most modern tactical flashlights are very bright. By bright I mean it hurts your brain to look at them – bright. If someone is threatening you, just flash the light in their eyes and blind them temporarily while you make your get away or maneuver into position. Also, a lot of tactical flashlights have bezel edges. These are supposed to assist you in breaking a window, but I wouldn’t try that with my flashlight. What they would be good at though is hitting someone and defending yourself.

Identify threats – It’s a light. If you are ever walking in the dark and need to shine a light on a dark or murky area, your trusty flashlight is perfect for that. Lights can easily light up dark corners even in the back seat before you approach your car so you know what is around. With the brightness of modern tactical flashlights you can do this from a pretty good distance too.

Help in emergency situations – In an emergency, the power can go out. Having your flashlight on you will mean that you instantly have light. Have you ever been sitting in the house before and the power went out. All you have to do is just reach down to your side and grab your flashlight and Voila!

When you lose the remote – Seriously, you will be amazed at the number of times you will reach for your flashlight that you never thought of. That and looking down throats to make sure someone does not have a raging case of strep throat. Flashlight tag… millions of potential uses.
